In 1982, one of my friends tearfully divulged her "horrible secret" to me. She then described her cycle of purging after every meal. Neither one of us knew what this was or why she struggled with this, so she never received the help she needed. In 1983, the tragic passing of Karen Carpenter awakened all of us to the seriousness of this type of disorder. I treat ALL Eating Disorders.
For many, the tormenting cycle of binge-eating, purging and restricting behaviors can be painfully difficult for families to helplessly watch--let alone for the client to endure.
I have resources and connections with people all over the U.S. We have come a long way in treating Anorexia Nervosa. No one needs to die from this ever again. It's not too late.
Effective and successful ways I treat eating disorders include individual and family therapy and the "team approach". This ongoing communication with my client's family, physician, psychiatrist, dietitian, clergy and any other health professional during both inpatient and outpatient treatment enhances continuity of care and helps to prevent a relapse.
I was trained at the University of Chicago to use a successful, family-based treatment for children and adolescents called the Maudsley Approach, in which the therapist adopts a supportive role in the family and helps to guide parents in re-feeding their children. I have written for the website, Maudsley Parents, a supportive network for parents and families.
Fortunately, most clients are able to eventually let go of the eating disordered part of them during our sessions. I am attuned to the medical, as well as psychological aspects of this disorder, and I have been able to refer clients before they become medically unstable. In the event I must refer a client to an eating disorder treatment center, I will discuss options with the client, family and team. I have professional relationships with many treatment sites across the country. You will have support no matter where you are in your stages of healing.
My goal is to open the doors of my practice to this very special population. With compassion and patience, families are given the opportunity to come together and help their loved ones heal.
If you or someone you love is experiencing signs of an eating disorder, please schedule an appointment with me.
